🗣️ Free Speech & Business Consequences

The tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk has sparked heated reactions nationwide. In its wake, some business owners who publicly suggested Kirk “deserved” his fate or spoke out against Charlie in insensitive ways have faced boycotts and customer backlash.

This moment underscores a vital truth: free speech protects us from government punishment, but it does not protect us from market consequences. Every post, comment, or statement—whether personal or professional—can quickly impact reputation, partnerships, and sales.

As leaders, we know customer trust is the cornerstone of every enterprise. Thoughtful communication and clear guidelines for staff and owners alike can help safeguard that trust while still respecting the value of open expression.

At NDBU, our role is not to tell members what to believe, but to ensure you understand the practical risks and opportunities of the environment you’re operating in. This moment is a vivid example of how national events can intersect with local commerce.

As you reflect, consider: What policies or guardrails do we have in place for ourselves, our staff, and our business accounts? How would we respond if we suddenly found ourselves the target of a boycott campaign?

We encourage members to share experiences and strategies so we can learn from one another in navigating this complex reality.  Please share your thoughts in the comments.
